Have you ever sat on the couch and gone channel surfing for hours trying to find the right movie to watch? I have found myself in this dilemma multiple times but no need to fret anymore when you are in this situation, I have the solution.
The American Film Institute came up with a list of 100 of the best movies. The AFI members explain themselves as “Established in 1967, the American Film Institute is the nation’s nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and inspiring artists and audiences through initiatives that champion the past, present and future of the moving image,” from the American Film Institute website. The institute is also a world-renowned liberal arts college focusing on film majors.
To come up with this small list of 100 movies out of all of the films created, members gathered up almost 2,000 of the industry’s best screen writers, directors, actors, producers, cinematographers, editors, executives, film historians and film critics. From the minds of these influential film makers, a list of 400 movies was created. The AFI selected the top 100 out of that list.
Most of the 100 films are older, from the mid to late 1900s, but there is every genre of movie, from hardcore action to hilarious comedies. These “old” movies are the backbone of modern cinema. Directors were able to experiment with movies to create new innovative ideas to make movies that are still being used today. Not all the movies are American films, so it shows the transformation of cinematic history across the century and across the world.
If you are ever looking for a movie again, pop some popcorn, get comfy and take a look at AFI’s list of 100 movies and pick one you think looks interesting. There is no wrong choice with so many cinematic masterpieces, so do not be afraid to pick at random.
